eyelashmag.com | JULY/AUGUST 2016 | eye | la 31 do extensions damage natural lashes? The media often perpetuates the myth that eyelash extensions can make the natural lashes brittle or, worse, lead to excessive lash loss. So-called experts and even some lash service providers might suggest lash clients take regular breaks from extensions to protect the health of their natural lashes. Here's the reality: Improperly applied lash extensions can cause problems, but properly applied extensions actually can assist natural lashes to be stronger and healthier than before. When this myth comes up, I point out that eyelash extensions eliminate the need for lash curlers and daily mascara, which cuts down on follicle stress, exposure to bacteria (from contaminated mascara) and harsh scrubbing to remove mascara (or worse, going to sleep with lashes still clumped and caked in mascara). If any lash provider says a client's natural lashes need a "break" from extensions, it might be for one of these reasons: ➻ They're applying "cluster" lashes, fl ares of fi ve to seven lashes with a knot at the base. These can't be applied individually to natural lashes and instead are laid across multiple lashes. This interrupts the natural growth cycle, resulting in follicle stress. ➻ They're using individual extensions but are not isolating properly to get a single bond to each natural lash. Sometimes called "express lashes," this coat-and-drop application essentially adheres large chunks of natural lashes together, causing the issues listed above. ➻ They're using extensions that are too long, too thick or both. This is why it's important to fi nd a service provider who cares about safety and is trained to know what each client's natural lashes can handle. — COURTNEY BUHLER, founder, Sugarlash Pro, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada MYTH BUSTING PHOTOGRAPHY: STOCK_COLORS PremierBond and PremierVolume Adhesives made in the USA Designer Lashes available in .05, .07, .10, .12 & .15 diameters and B, C, D, L & L+ curls After Care and Retail items Tweezers to Eyepads, Lighting to Magnifiers, you'll find it at PremierLash.
