Whereas last season sparkle dressed eyes and brows, this spring the twinkle is
traveling south to the lips. At DKNY, makeup artist Pat McGrath waged a glitter
crusade with two variations:
metallic raspberry lips lustered with micro-fi ne red
glitter in the middle and chocolate brown pouts fully shellacked in sparkle. "It's
quite a modern way to wear the lip, with that bare, bare face," McGrath says of
the overall makeup design. "It's all about the lip being the jewelry." Ah, yes—
the lip as jewelry: It's an idea that makeup artists have no problem visualizing.
For the launch of Smashbox Be Legendary Liquid Metal, makeup artist Vlada
Haggerty partnered with jewelry designer Zoe Chicco to
produce a literal lip bauble: During the hour-long lip art
installation Haggarty used 80 diamonds weighing over 6.5
carats with the fi nal appraisal totaling $26,500, garnering
the encrusted mouth the Guinness World Record for "Most
Valuable Lip Art."
Of course, diamonds are likely out of the question,
and even glitter can be a gloppy mess on mouths—not
to mention drying. To grant your client a similar effect
minus fl eck fallout and jelling, try a matte metallic fi nish or
iridescent glimmer gloss as your lip glitz alternative.
