PRIMER: Its main function is to set up a smooth canvas for your makeup creation. Yet, sometimes primer will roll, or "ball up," when you glide it onto skin, creating loose pills that are the antithesis of smooth. Why does this happen? Natalie Soto-Carlisle, Jane Iredale global educator and makeup artist, reveals two reasons behind primer pilling and their solutions: 1 You haven't allowed the skin enough time to absorb skincare products. "When you apply certain skincare products (think: serums or oil-based products) prior to primer, you need to allow time for them to sink into the skin," she says. Wait fi ve minutes before applying primer, and you should net a seamless application. 2 Your primer has a high silicone content. "Silicone is a fi ller—which makes sense in a primer as it works to fi ll in dips and pores to smooth out the skin's texture," she says. Because silicone doesn't get absorbed by the skin, it has a greater potential to pill on top of the skin than, say, a non-silicone primer. is doesn't necessarily mean you need to steer completely clear of silicone-based primers; instead, use a lighter hand during application. If you choose to nix silicone, we've gathered four primers that promise not to pill!
