"Often our eyelashes do not reach their maximum potential because of premature breakage, and a healthy diet can provide the necessary nutrients to minimize lash loss and breakage," explains Paulette Lambert, RD, CDE, director of nutrition for the California Health & Longevity Institute at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village, California. Be sure you're getting plenty of these lash-loving nutrients: PROTEIN Lashes and brows are made mostly of protein, and skimping on protein can lengthen the resting phase of the hair growth cycle. Lambert recommends eating 0.3 to 0.5 grams of protein per pound of body weight daily. For a 140-pound woman, that's 42 to 70 grams a day. Some of the best sources include fi sh, lean poultry, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, beans, quinoa and whole-grain pasta. OMEGA-3S These essential fatty acids are necessary for hair growth and hydration, and can be found in fatty fi sh such as salmon, olive oil, nuts and avocados. IRON Hair loss is one of the fi rst signs of iron defi ciency. Great sources of iron include lean red meat, chicken, fi sh, legumes and cooked spinach. PHOTOGRAPHY: COLNIHKO
