Opinions vary, but there's a general consensus that optimal bonds are achieved when salon air is maintained between 40 percent and 65 percent RH (relative humidity). "Cyanoacrylate adhesives cure (polymerize) when exposed to humidity in the air and the humidity of the adherents," says Schoon. "The higher the relative humidity of the room, the faster these products will cure." Although a very low humidity level (30 percent or less) will slow curing time, a higher room temperature mitigates this effect. "A 10°F increase in temperature can double the rate of polymerization," says Schoon. In this case, care must be taken not to introduce too much moisture. Client comfort & best practices Working in harmony with science helps to make your extensions foolproof. But what can make them more pleasant, especially for a client who has been lying on a table for 90 minutes, exposed to the vapors in the adhesive? The cooling effect of a nebulizer or nanomister certainly can. "The distilled water used in these devices is refreshing to the client, and also minimizes any stinging or redness," says Heijligers-Peloquin. But don't overlook other best practices to ensure client comfort. It's important to work in a properly ventilated room and to wash lashes post-treatment to remove any residual chemicals and prevent minor sensitivities from erupting into bigger problems later on. In the end, your understanding and implementation of the science aspect of your lash extension services can make all the difference in distinguishing you from other extensionists in an increasingly competitive sector. "A lot of info is passed along anecdotally, but lash students aren't generally taught the particulars about these devices," says Heijligers-Peloquin. "They're a nice benefi t for the client, but what affect eventual results are good technique, the right tools, products, lighting and education!" 1 | PREMIERLASH NANO MISTER A fashionable and eco-friendly option with a 30-second auto shut-off feature and a USB-rechargeable lithium battery. premierlash.com 2 | GLAD LASH NANOMISTER This sleek model delivers an ultra-fi ne mist while it reduces post-application irritation. eyelashextensions.com 3 | JB LASHES NANO LASH CURING MIST Releases nano particles of moisture to hydrate the eye area and enhance the curing process. jblashes.com 4 | LASH FX NANOMISTER A fi ve-second mist from this compact tool rehydrates lashes and the eye area as a fi nishing touch to the extension service. lashfx.com 5 | STELLALASH THE LASH NEBULIZER Transforms bottled spring water into a cooling vapor with the help of electronic vibrating mesh technology.
